Illuminating Unity

A voice to resound the beauty and importance of reviving Culture

This art piece was created as a voice to resound the beauty and importance of reviving Culture. Art is a vital tool for the course and I have chosen to explore that in this creation.

Each side of the box contains symbols from different countries of West Africa, and each of these symbols mean something culturally significant in these countries and would usually have their representative colors, but for this course, I believe that color can be a dividing force, so I decided to carve out these symbols in black engravings, because, before we are from Ivory Coast or Ghana or Nigeria or Senegal, we are first African we're BLACK!

From the knowledge of colors, every color emerges from black and illumination or light unveils, introduces, identifies a color. The illumination also represents the revealing of a pathway, just as light shines to make a path clear to an individual or a people.

I have infused all the cultural vices like clothing, pictorial elements, and songs into this creation. The piece of clothing used is called a Kampala, which is one common material that is used in these countries, for creative creation of clothing pieces/products.

To digitalize this project, I have included engraved QR codes on each side of the box, which leads to the curation of songs and pictorial elements, as concerns the countries displayed on that side of the box.
